(1) General information
Any practical activity in the student legal advice team requires a regular participation in the study programme of the Law Clinic Augsburg. The study programme usually begins in the last weeks of April. The study programme consists of a two-semester training and further educational events.
(2) Training Units

The study programme consists of compulsory lectures as well as elective workshops and individual lectures. There are also different excursions (some of which are obligatory) and further educational events.

  1. Compulsory lectures
(to be attended in the first training semester)
    a. Law of aliens and asylum for a total duration of 20 lessons,
    b. Introduction to administrative law and asylum procedural law for a total duration of 4 lessons,
    c. Basics of student legal advice for a total duration of 2 lessons.
  2. Workshops
(in the first training semester 2 out of 3 and in the second training semester 5 out 7 must to be attended)
    a. Soft Skills workshops:
Four workshops for the acquisition of so-called “soft skills” for a total duration of 2 lessons each (e.g. legal counselling, collaboration with interpreters).
    b. “Students for Students” Workshops:
Six workshops for a total duration of 2 lessons each. The content includes the individual European Directives, the European Regulations and the implementation of the European Legal Acts into German law or into German law of aliens and asylum.
  3. Practical day
(to be attended in the first and the second training semester and in every other semester of the practical activity):
Introduction and further training in consulting for a total duration of 8 lessons.
  4. Lecture programme
(to be attended in the first and the second semester and in every other semester of the practical activity):
Several lectures about relevant topics regarding law of aliens and asylum (or tenancy law). Every project participant must attend two topics of their choice during the first and the second semester and every other semester during their practical activity.
  5.  Further training events
(to be attended in the second training semester and in every other semester of the practical activity after the education):
Events for the further study of alien and asylum law for a total duration of 8 lessons, including legal innovations and current developments.
  6. Excursions
    1. At least four stays at the administrative court Augsburg are obligatory. Every project participant must write a summary about one of the visits,
    2. Varying excursions to different institutions (e.g. BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees), UNHCR or similar ones).
  7. Practical tasks
(in the first and/or second training semester)

    1. Every participant must participate in at least three counseling sessions and either
    2. prepare and hold a Students for Students Workshop or
    3. edit a research/expert report or
    4. give a presentation.
(3) Attendance

The participants’ attendance is checked at the events using an attendance list the participants can sign. Depending on the event, the absence from an event will have different consequences for the further training programme and the practical activity.

  1. The compulsory lecture „Law of aliens and asylum” (see (2) 1. a) above) must be attended completely. If one or more of these lectures are missed, the participant cannot engage in expert or practical activity. The knowledge acquired in these compulsory lectures provides the basis for the training of the participants and the quality assurance of the expert activity and the practical activity (cf. § 6 (2) RDG (Legal Services Act)). An illness or an exam is no excuse for being absent. Whilst the participant is still allowed to participate in the study programme, he/she can neither engage in expert or practical activity. Also, he/she can only catch up on that compulsory lecture “Law of aliens and asylum” the following year. In this case, because of the regular changes in this subject area, all lectures on the subject of “Law of aliens and asylum” must be attended again, even if only one meeting was missed initially. The participant will receive the certificate (see (4) below) only after he/she has attended the compulsory lecture “Law of aliens and asylum”.
  2. The compulsory lectures „Basics of student legal advice” and “Introduction into administrative law and asylum procedural law” (see (2) 1. b) – c) above) must be attended by all participants, irrespective of their course of study, number of semesters or a completed exam or term paper in the respective subject area. It is possible to be excused absent from one (of three) meetings due to an illness or an unexpected collision with an exam. In this case, a medical certificate/form of proof must be handed in without having been requested. If the participant does not provide evidence without being prompted or is absent at more than on event, he/she is still allowed to participate in the study programme but is not allowed to engage in expert or practical activity. He/she can only make up for missing or unexcused lectures in the following year and can only receive the certificate (see (4) below) after catching up.
  3. In the first training semester the participants must attend 2 out of 3 and in the second training semester 5 out of 7 of the Students for Students or Soft Skills Workshops (see (2) 2. above). The participants may be excused absent for one meeting each term because of illness or an unexpected collision with an exam, if it is not possible to attend another workshop in that term. In this case, a medical certificate/form of proof must be handed in without having been requested. He/she can make up for missing or unexcused lectures from the first training semester in the second training semester. Therefore, in total 7 out of 10 workshops must be attended. The participant can only receive the certificate (see (4) below) after catching up.
  4. In the first and the second training semester, the participants must attend at least once practical day. After that, they should take part in the practical day every semester. It is possible to be excused absent due to an illness or an unexpected collision with an exam. In this case, a medical certificate/form of proof must be handed in without having been requested. He/she can make up for a missing or unexcused practical day in the following semester. The participant can only receive the certificate (see (4) below) after catching up.
  5. The participants must attend 2 lectures (see (2) 4. above) per semester (even after concluding the two-semester training). Due to the number of available meetings, an absence cannot be excused. If the participant has attended only one or no lectures in the first or second training semester, he/she is still allowed to participate in the study programme. He/she must then attend the missing lecture(s) in addition to the 2 compulsory ones in the following semester. The participant can only receive the certificate (see (4) below) after catching up.
  6.  After concluding the two-semester training, the participants must attend a further training event about law of aliens and asylum (see (2) 5.) in every other semester of their practical activity. This event serves to highlight the legal innovations and current developments in this subject and is key for maintaining the quality and standard of the expert and practical activity (cf. § 6 (2) RDG (Legal Services Act)). An absence cannot be excused in the case of an illness/exam/etc.
  7. The participants must participate in at least four appointments at the administrative court Augsburg (see (2) 6. a) above). If this cannot be completed through the visits organized by the Law Clinic Augsburg, the participant may independently visit in a trial related to the relevant subkect and submit corresponding proof (e.g. certification of the judge). However, so that the reports can be compared, the report about the visit of the tribunal must be written about a trial which other Law Clinic Augsburg participants attended.
(4) Certificates

After successfully completing  the two-semester study programme of the Law Clinic Augsburg, the students receive a certificate listing the attended events and excursions. The certificate is signed by the director of the Law Clinic Augsburg.
